Lee A. Hutton, III
Partner
Zelle Hofmann Voelbel & Mason LLP
1) How did you do it?
By way of background, I have made Partner at two twin cities law firms. As I reflect on my path, I can confidently state that staying true to myself has provided a clear foundation for success in the field of law. Of course, a little tenacity and taking risks helps.
With that said, all lawyers must continue to grow as an attorney. It begins with client relationships and truly understanding the client’s culture, goals, and litigation tolerance. I have learned to listen to clients and “think outside the box”.
In addition, I have observed specific professionals in the city. In my early years of practice, I often sat in the Hennepin Courthouse gallery watching trial and taking notes as if I were preparing for a Big Ten football opponent. This helped prepare me for trial. Since then, I have tried many cases to verdict to the satisfaction of clients.
Most importantly to become Partner, you need clients. Over the years, I have worked to become efficient and accurate. I have developed the skill to determine quickly the value of the case and if the case needs to be tried. I have focused my legal services to the three “R’s” that are important to clients. Results, Relationships, and Relaxation (clients want to breathe knowing that their legal needs are properly handled efficiently and economically). This simple formula has allowed me to build a strong client base.
2) What do you do outside of the law?
My kids are primary outside of the courtroom. Recently, I have learned how to balance personal and work. So, you will find me coaching football, track, baseball gymnastics and ballet.
In 2014, I teamed up with WCCO Radio and Eric Nelson to deliver legal issues concerning sports. The radio segment is titled “Sports in the Courts”.
3) Who were the people critical to your success?
While I do not believe I have reached “success”, I credit my journey to everyone I have encountered.
4) Who do you want to thank?
Individuals to thank include: Val Jensen, Dale Thornsjo, Judge Toussaint, Bob Abdo, Margie Bodas, Val Sims, Phil Cole, Pat St. Peter, Dan Millea, Rick Hagstrom, Nick Dolejsi, and Justin Evans.
