1.What is your area of practice?
I practice in general business litigation. One advantage of being in a large firm is that I have the opportunity to work on a variety of different matters. For example, on my desk right now are the usual suspects, a loan foreclosure, a shareholder dispute, and a couple of contract cases, but I also have a case in tax court, an asbestos defense case, and social security benefits appeal. I love the challenge of applying the litigation skills I have to a new area of the law and I usually learn a few things along the way. It definitely keeps things interesting!
2.Why are you unique??
Well, I’m a transplant to Minnesota, which sort of sets me apart from many people in the Twin Cities legal field. Not having that shared history, whether it be growing up here or attending the same college or law school, forces me to find other ways to connect with others. Another thing that makes me unique is my extensive vinyl record collection – I’ve only met one other attorney in the Twin Cities who shares this passion with me.
3.How did you do it?
The same as anyone else I suppose. I try to work each day not only to be a better lawyer and represent my clients well, but to make our profession and community a better place to work and live for all individuals, not just the ones who have had the same advantages that I have.
4.What do you do outside of law?
I’m getting married at the end of September, so right now it feels like all I do outside of the law is wedding planning! I enjoy spending time outdoors with my fiancé and our puppy. We spend as many weekends as possible at the cabin in Ely, hiking, paddling, and generally relaxing. When in town, I enjoy running and biking around the lakes and visiting local taprooms.
5.Who were the people critical to your success and who do you want to thank?
My parents, of course, for not only giving me the tools I needed to succeed but also expecting me to use them to the best of my ability. Chief Judge Ed Cleary on the Minnesota Court of Appeals, who I clerked for, gave me my first real legal position in Minnesota, which was vital to building a successful career here. All the mentors I have had throughout my career, both assigned and self-selected, who have provided advice and insight on how to be a good lawyer and a good person. Finally, my fiancé, who helps me maintain balance in a stressful career and reminds me to eat my vegetables.
