How to be a great MENTEE

Being in a mentor/mentee relationship requires work by both people in the relationship.  2015.10.29_TCDIP_HiRes002Often times it is hard to understand what makes a relationship work and it has nothing to do with the intentions of the parties. However, there are certain things you can do as a mentee to make the relationship work.

-Be the first to follow-up and make contact.

-Understand your mentor has a very busy career if he/she does not get back to you right away – don’t give up.

-Understand their background.

-Do your Research on the firm, corporation or organization they work for so you understand key things about their workplaces. (i.e. small firm, large firm, corporate law department, practice areas).

-Look for any key cases, articles or presentations they published.

Come prepared with questions and to discuss your interests.

Be on time….PLEASE!

-Do not expect the mentor to pay.

Do not be a serial “canceller”…in other words do not make meetings you cannot keep and keep cancelling!

HAVE FUN!

2015.10.29_TCDIP_HiRes005Great mentees come with energy and an openness to learn.  Humility goes a long way to bridge any divide.  Building an authentic relationship takes time and energy but may not result in
employment – yet. However, building your brand as a lawyer begins now and requires being intentional in all your interactions.

Good luck!
